Colours of Birds

The festival of colours has arrived!Perhaps the best way to celebrate Holi   is to look closely at trees and birds rather  than splashing harmful chemical colours on each other.

Would like to concentrate only on Colours of  Birds in this article.No descriptions of Birds or their photographs.

There are many birds whose names include well-known colour names like Red vented Bulbul, Green Pigeon, Yellow Wagtail, White eyed Buzzard, Green Bee eater, Grey Heron , Purple Heron,Golden oriole etc. etc.

Luckily, there are some beautiful birds with equally charming and colourful names .

Giving below are a few examples , in a random order, explaining vivid colours of birds in a simple language  to appreciate their beauty and their well chosen names by the Ornithologists(🙏) of the bygone era:

(1) Crimson headed Barbet, Crimson Sun-Bird: 

Crimson is a strong, red color, inclining to purple. हिंदी में कह सकते हैं:किरमिजी रंग या गहरा लाल रंग।

(2) Cinerous Vulture, Cinerous Tit, Cinerous Buntings etc.

Cinereous means  ashy grey , or a grey colour tinged with coppery brown. हिंदी में कह सकते हैं लगभग खाकी या राख और भूरे रंग का मिश्रण।

(3) Rufous Tree Pie

Rufous is a reddish-brown or brownish-red colour as of rust .हिंदी में लाल और भूरे रंग का मिश्रण।

(4)Citrine Wagtail:

Citrine is yellow or greenish yellow. हिंदी में ऐसा  समझें: नींबू का रंग।

(5) Sepia Capped Flycatcher 

     (Not found in India)

Sepia is a reddish-brown color, derived from the ink sac of the common Cuttlefish. लाल और भूरे रंग का मिश्रण।

(6) Rosy Starling

Rose is a color  between red and magenta.हिंदी में लाल और बैंगनी रंगों का मिश्रण।या एक प्रकार का गुलाबी रंग।

(7) Fulvous Whistling Duck.

Fulvous is a  dull orange, brownish-yellow or tawny colour.पीले और भूरे रंग का मिश्रण।

(8) Ferruginous Pochard

Ferruginous Color  is colour of iron rust; reddish-brown.जंग लगे लोहे का रंग। ( Remember School Chemistry ---Ferrous Alloys)

(9) Scarlet Minivet

Scarlet is a brilliant red color, sometimes with a slightly orange tinge.

लाल और नारंगी रंगों के बीच का रंग।

(10) Ruddy Kingfisher, Ruddy Shelduck

Ruddy means Healthy Red colour.

A large no of Ruddy Shelducks at Sirpur often present 'Ruddy Shower' to the eyesights.

(11) Pallid Harrier

Pallid means pale, or lacking color. हल्का पीला या रंगहीन।

(12) Tawny Owl

Tawny (also called tenné) is a light brown to brownish-orange color.हल्के भूरे और नारंगी रंगों का मिश्रण।

(13) Ruby throated Bulbul

Ruby is a shade of red or pink. लाल और गुलाबी रंगों के बीच में।

(14) Glaucous gull 

     ( Not found in India)

Glaucous denotes a bluish-green or grey colour.

(15) Sooty Gull

Sooty is used in names of birds and other animals that are mainly blackish or brownish black.

(16) Plum headed Parakeet

Plum is a purple color with a brownish-gray tinge. आड़ू फल का रंग।

(17) Emerald Dove:

Emerald is a color that is a shade of green. It is light and bright, with a slight bluish tinge. The name comes from the color of emerald. हिंदी में पन्ना।
